Common Sense … & Wisdom …

“Deep Peace”, Bill Douglas, from the album of the same name, (1996)

Revisited my post from the 6th of July   especially the last half which was a quote from the Book of Wisdom … Wisdom 7 Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA) Seems the primary English translation from the Latin Vulgate, the Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible is not “copyrighted”.

The Douay–Rheims Bible is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English made by members of the Catholic seminary English College, Douai, France. It is the foundation on which nearly all English Catholic versions are still based.

It was translated principally by Gregory Martin, an Oxford-trained scholar, working in the circle of English Catholic exiles on the Continent, under the sponsorship of William (later Cardinal) Allen.

The New Testament appeared at Rheims in 1582; the Old Testament at Douai in 1609. The translation, although competent, exhibited a taste for Latinisms that was not uncommon in English writing of the time but seemed excessive in the eyes of later generations. The New Testament influenced the Authorized Version.

Between 1749 and 1752, English bishop Richard Challoner substantially revised the translation with an aim to improve readability and comprehensibility. Bishop Challoner’s revised version is the one I use, published by TAN in the U.S. in 1989.

It was first published in America in 1790 by Mathew Carey of Philadelphia. Several American editions followed in the 19th and early 20th centuries; prominent among them the Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition Version.

Wisdom 7: 1-3

*****

1 I myself also am a mortal man, like all others, and of the race of him, that was first made of the earth, and in the womb of my mother I was fashioned to be flesh.

2 In the time of ten months I was compacted in blood, of the seed of man, and the pleasure of sleep concurring.

3 And being born I drew in the common air, and fell upon the earth, that is made alike, and the first voice which I uttered was crying, as all others do.

*****

“I myself also am a mortal man, like all others”, I especially like this chapter of Wisdom. It speaks to the true commonality of mankind, rather than our stylish modern “Common Sense”.  Commonality transcends cultures and societies and goes to the root of what is truly human.

These days, I enjoy watching foreign shows on Netflix, especially since most haven’t succumbed to the Hollywood direction of the main characters hopping into bed with every creature they meet on the first date, a kind of smorgasbord of passion and animal lust, all lungs and sweaty thorax and four hours in makeup to look hot in bed. No more western TV for me, no joy there at all, just a reflection of a dead end quest for sensate immortality and distraction.

So, I watched a show last night in which one of the protagonists explained to a grieving friend how it all passes away … “All joy passes away with time, but so does sorrow and sadness” or something to that effect. I thought is was an apt comment about our times and the goals and choices held up to us by the world as “desirable” and “satisfying”.

St. Paul said: “We are fools for Christ.” … “we are weak, but you are strong; you are honourable, but we without honour. 11Even unto this hour we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no fixed abode; 12And we labour, working with our own hands: we are reviled, and we bless; we are persecuted, and we suffer it. 13We are blasphemed, and we entreat; we are made as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all even until now.” (1 Corinthians 4:10-13)

Venerable Fulton Sheen

Much of the rest of this post is drawn from my readings of Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen and Cardinal John Henry Newman. Specifically from:

John Henry Newman, Parochial and Plain Sermons, bk. 6, no. 7 (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1977), 1241-45.

and

Fulton J. Sheen, Go to Heaven: A Spiritual Road Map to Eternity (p. 132). Ignatius Press.

Much is made these days of “Common Sense” as if somehow, “all right thinking persons” have common sense … hence, in our polite society, there is alleged a commonality of “common sense” amongst those “who think like me and agree with me”. This commonality permits me to virtue signal my esteem of others without ever taking my eyes off myself in the mirror.

Now, common sense never drove any man crazy, common sense supposedly defines “sanity”. But let’s think about this just a bit, this bald assumption about “common” sense.

Common sense never climbed mountains and certainly never cast a mountain into the sea in the biblical sense, common sense is not in any way about faith. Common sense is not violent and yet, violence is the commonest thing in our culture, in our society, and in our world.

Common sense never walked on the moon, or flew a plane or wrote a symphony, and common sense certainly never ran into a burning high rise to save lives.

Common sense never moves towards the sound of the guns, never makes a man willing to offer up his life, and yet it is in losing our life that we put into practice “greater love hath no man”.

Life sometimes can be saved by walking within an inch of death, facing the raging fire, standing firm against impossible odds, in jumping down a cliff, but common sense never makes those sort of jumps.

The soldier at times can cut his way out of his surrounding enemies, perhaps to save his comrades, or perhaps fall upon the grenade to save the rest, but he must have an uncommon carelessness about dying—and common sense does not permit that carelessness.

The Kingdom of heaven can sometimes be gained only by plucking out an eye—but common sense never plucked it out. Common sense is all about self, the “me first” knee jerk reaction.

Common sense makes a man die only for the sake of dying, for there is no choice about dieing, right? All that matters ultimately is dieing without pain, or loss of “dignity”.

It is not common sense, but love and a spirit of self sacrifice which makes a man choose to die for the sake of living—and it is the love of Jesus Christ crucified, which produces the wisdom of heaven at the cost of the foolishness of self sacrifice, of the abandonment of self, in the eyes of the world.

Al Pacino, Devil’s Advocate

Love makes men throw down their lives to take them up again, makes men sell fields for the pearl of great price, makes men treat the world as a trinket, laugh at death, and offer up everything for the one loved.

No matter the opinion of “common sense”, the opinion of the world, the Gospel of Christ is not a gospel of sorrow.

Our contemporary society’s view is that this life is made for pleasure and happiness. Any other view is ridiculed as foolishness. But to those who have actually experienced a few decades of this world, to those who have looked under the surface, it tells a very different tale.

Our doctrine of the Cross teaches the very same lesson which this world teaches to those who live long enough in it, who have much experience in it, who have lived it. Our doctrine of the Cross teaches this lesson more forcibly, but after all it is the very same lesson.

Even today, at this advanced age, some of my friends, when talking about other friends, not present, and often no longer in the world, will say “… and then he got religion”, as if this were like getting some illness. No doubt they say the same thing about me when I am not around. From my viewpoint this is simply the process of waking up … to a new dawn.

Someone famous once said: “The world is sweet to the lips, but bitter to the taste. It pleases us at first, but not at last. It looks gay on the outside, but evil and misery lie concealed within”. When a man has passed a certain number of years in it, he cries out with the Preacher, ‘Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.’

And if he doesn’t “get religion” … he will be forced to say: “All is vanity and vexation of spirit; all is disappointment; all is sorrow; all is pain”. Without the doctrine of the Cross we are invited to accept the culture of death, to escape our pain and disillusion, to accept evil with only a whimper and a sigh, as we stare, runny-eyed into the chasm of the banal..

The judgments of God upon our sins, upon our worship of the god of self, are concealed within the very fabric of the world itself, and eventually these force all men to grief whether they want it or not. The doctrine of the Cross merely anticipates for us the experience of the world. It is a “sneak preview” of the truth of eternity.

The doctrine of the Cross interferes with the common sense superficial view, and with finding a vain transitory joy in what we see and taste and feel, and experience. The doctrine of the Cross forbids our immediate enjoyment, but it grants enjoyment in truth and fullness afterwards. It only forbids us to begin with enjoyment. It only says, if you begin with pleasure you will end in pain.

Blessed John Henry Newman

The doctrine of the Cross bids us begin with the Cross, and in that Cross we shall at first find sorrow, but in a while peace and comfort will rise out of that sorrow.

That Cross leads us to conversion, to mourning, repentance, humiliation, prayer, fasting; we shall sorrow for our sins, we shall sorrow with Christ’s suffering; but all this sorrow will only be undergone in, and result in a happiness far greater than the enjoyment which the world gives—though careless worldly minds will not believe this because it defies common sense.

Careless worldly minds, minds obsessed with “common sense”, ridicule the notion of happiness through sorrow, because they never have tasted it, and consider it a mere matter of word play, semantic gymnastics. In a world of ideology, that truth which religious persons think decent and proper, and try to believe themselves, and to get others to believe, is to the common sense mind impossible, no right minded person really feels that truth.

But in order to truly enjoy this world one must begin with the world unseen, the supernatural world. We must first abstain from the world to truly enjoy the world. We must first fast in order to truly feast. Only those who have learned not to abuse the world are able to use the world. They alone inherit the world, who take it as only a shadow of the world to come, and who, for that world to come, relinquish this world.

“I myself also am a mortal man, like all others”. The “Common Sense” of self worship is a dead end. “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.” John Donne. from “Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, and severall steps in my Sicknes“, written in 1624

Christ and Antichrist (part 2)

The Return Of The King” Howard Shore, composer, from the soundtrack of “The Return Of The King”, part 3 of “The Lord Of The Rings”, released on December 17th, 2003.

The snow has finally stopped … my coffee is hot and black, my music clip today is the title piece from Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”.

This trio of films had been dismissed by neo-pagan secular humanist reviewers as a simple “adventure movie, set in a strange world, climaxing with a battle between the forces of good, represented by the heroes and heroines, and the forces of evil, represented by the stranger, the odd, or the mean-spirited (Yes, I guess Sauron and Saruman might be described as odd, the stranger, or even mean spirited, yes mean spirited, that’s accurate I guess, especially for a society which buys into the idea that it is just OK to dismember babies and sell their body parts for profit).

These scenarios, make it all too easy for filmgoers to cheer for the good guys (with whom they quite naturally identify) and boo the bad guys (stand-ins for everything they don’t approve of) (isn’t this exactly what these neo-pagans are actively doing in this very review? I suppose, logically then, there is no “good” and “bad” then … always excepting, of course, that if the neo-pagans don’t approve of any particular Religious or believers then that is “good” because anyone who disagrees with any of the progressive left is “a priori”, even by definition, “BAD”).

The world is seen as the stage for dueling dualisms, “us” versus “them” (BAD GUY ALERT!) where it is perfectly acceptable for one side to completely obliterate the “other.” This kind of simplistic storytelling contributes to the creation of what Sam Keen has called the “hostile imagination”? (So good and evil are not real, it’s just “us” versus “them” or “The Other” …  So I guess, logically, there could be no such a thing as “Sin” in this neo-pagan worldview. Gee, that’s convenient … hmmm … sounding rather “anti christian” here, dare I mention, a subtle flavour of “Antichrist”).

This worldview develops out of prejudice and hatred, two diseases of the mind  ( I guess what they are saying is “believers with a moral compass are actually prejudiced, hating, and diseased” … Wow! Who knew! I bet these reviewers have  weekend part time job crafting sign and posters for all those anti-Trump protestors the MSM so love to cover) but back to diseases of the mind in which we project our feelings of fear, resentment, self-disgust, anger, alienation, and paranoia on others whom we perceive to be different (especially strangers).”

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the hugely popular “Return of the King” was the culmination of nearly 10 years’ work and the conclusion to Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy based on the timeless J.R.R. Tolkien classic.

Aragorn leads the allies to the Black Gate in an attempt to distract Sauron from seeking out Frodo, Sam and the Ring. But Sauron’s army is much larger, and Aragorn is losing the battle. Their hopes rest with Frodo.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” presents the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil fighting for control of the future of Middle-earth. Hobbits Frodo and Sam reach Mordor in their quest to destroy the `one ring’, while Aragorn leads the forces of good against Sauron’s evil army at the stone city of Minas Tirith.

Remember, “The Lord of the Rings was written in an era when folks still superstitiously believed that good and evil realy existed in an absolute sense and were not just a matter of opinion. I guess that makes me an anachronism, a man out of time.

Anyway, here we are again, a few hours later and I was explaining the idea of “The Mystical Body of Christ”, and how it came about, as a prelude to positing the idea that the “Antichrist” is not a specific figure who we are striving to identify, but rather “the mystical body of Satan” acting out in “the Spirit of the times”, a perfect example of which is the above review viewed as apologetics for evil as a matter of opinion.

Historically, later on in the story of the Church, after the time of Saint Paul and the world he wrote to, as the Church grew, the Church Fathers, including St. Augustine, reaffirmed and amplified Paul’s assertion that the Christian Church is a spiritual extension of Christ’s body.

His Holiness Pope Pius XII

His Holiness Pope Pius XII (By Michael Pitcarin

Pope Pius XII , who was Pope during my early childhood, popularized the phrase in his encyclical Mystici Corporis Christi  (June 29, 1943).

The Catholic Dictionary explains it thus: “The Church is a body because she is a visible, living, and growing organism, animated by the Spirit of God. (The Church) … is a mystical body because her essential nature is a mystery, and all her teachings, laws, and rites are sacramental sources of grace.

And she is the mystical body of Christ because he founded the Church. He remains her invisible Head and through him all blessings are communicated to her members, and through them to the rest of humankind.”

The Second Vatican Council

The Second Vatican Council

The Second Vatican Council issued the “Dogmatic Constitution on the Church,” or “Lumen Gentium” (November 21, 1964; “Light of the Nations”), which reflected the broader, universal nature of the mystical body by stating that all persons are members of the Church, at least potentially, because Christ came to offer salvation to everyone.

Speaking of full membership in the Church, Pius XII, in his Encyclical on the Mystical Body, said it is the society of those who have been baptized, and who profess the faith of Christ, and who are governed by their bishops under the visible head, the Pope, the Bishop of Rome.

The Church came into being when Christ died on the Cross, but it was formally inaugurated on Pentecost, when He sent the Holy Spirit as He had promised. St. Paul speaks of all Christians as members of Christ, so that with Him, they form one Mystical Body (see 1 Cor 12:12-31; Col 1:18; 2:18-20; Eph. 1:22-23; 3:19; 4:13).

The Communion of Saints

The Communion of Saints

St. Paul did not use the word Mystical. It was developed more recently to bring out the fact that this union is unique, there is no parallel to it. It is not the same as the union of a physical body, nor that of a business corporation.

The Church, the Mystical Body, exists on this earth, and is called the Church militant, because its members struggle against the world, the flesh and the devil. The Church suffering means the souls in Purgatory. The Church triumphant is the Church in heaven. The unity and cooperation of the members of the Church on earth, in Purgatory, in Heaven is also called the Communion of Saints.

Joshua

Joshua

When St. Paul uses the word “Saints” in opening an Epistle, he does not mean they are morally perfect. He has in mind Hebrew “Qadosh”, which means set aside for God, or coming under the covenant. Being such means of course they are called to moral perfection. But of course, not all have reached it in this world.

The word “Saint” in the modern sense means someone who has been canonized by the Church in recent times, or was accepted as such by the Church in earlier times.

Saint John Paul II

Saint John Paul II

If a person is shown to have practiced heroic virtue–beyond what people in general do – in all virtues, the title “Venerable” is given; with two miracles by that one’s intercession, the title is “Blessed”; two more miracles can lead to canonization and the title of Saint.

Now, outside some people within the church and some believers, folks who have even a passing understanding of the process by which the Roman Catholic Church arrives at the point of proclaiming an individual as a “Saint” are rather thin on the ground.

It most certainly is not some “group think” resolution arrived at by a board room meeting of some cabal presided over by the Pope and involving the various department heads (the Curia) of the Roman Church establishment, the executives, so to speak. .

This is an in-depth rigorously developed legal investigation, requiring postulation, presentation, gathering of evidence, a defense team (The Postulator) and a prosecution team (The Devil’s Advocate).

Popular culture, namely the society which seems to embody the spirit of the times, the “Antichrist”, seems to understand “Saints” in the way presented by Hollywood and the MSM, and routinely call their “Saintliness” into question because, after all, the saints make us enlightened moderns look bad, by any standard.

Dan Brown

Dan Brown

Dan Brown, and the Hollywood team who rework his novels as screen plays for those who don’t read, are entertainers and entrepreneurs. Dan and the Hollywood screen writers don’t do in depth research nor do they write Truth, although their publicists go to great lengths to give the gullible customers of their product, the “low information” folks, the impression that in fact that is exactly what they do show and tell.

The plot lines of many modern movies reveal a puerile fascination with the sins and motives of others, preferably “respectable” others, which would not be out of line in the National Enquirer.

Dan and the Hollywoods (Hey! nice name for a new band) are popular and very successful developers of sensationalist entertainment. They want to sell their gloss of reality in the interests of forwarding the Big Lie, and making a boat load of money along the way.

Michael Moore

Michael Moore says the vast majority of Trump supporters are like rapists, Oooo, nice, just feel the love …

Part of that process necessarily involves extensive denigration and belittling of any and everyone who disagrees with their point of view, especially political enemies,  the Church, Christ, and Christians, the currently fashionable victims of choice.

Perhaps part of this choice is because of course Christians don’t retaliate by routinely show up in your office with an AK-47 to fix your breathing problem. This is where we get back to the Christ – Antichrist discussion.

So, as previously stated, “The Antichrist” is the opposite of Christ, the “Not Christ”. The Antichrist manifests the will of Satan among mankind. Satan’s whole ambition is to be like God in power and might, and he works for this with all of his might, night and day.

Remember, “Who opposeth, and is lifted up above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God.” 2 Thessalonians 2:4.

Satan’s stated intention is to replace God, and the mystical body of Satan, “The Antichrist”, is the means to do this.

The mystical body of Satan, an analog of the Mystical Body of Christ, denies mankind’s necessity for God, and asserts himself (the worship of self), that is “man”, as ruler of this world.

It does not matter to Satan whether his mystical body believes in him or not.  In fact, things go easier for him when mankind doesn’t believe in “The Father of Lies”. Ask yourself “what kind of a world would be willing to accept Satan as Lord”?

It seems apparent, given the popularity of every vice and evil in our modern society, that this modern world we live in has come to such a state. The prevailing spirit in the world is the “spirit of the Antichrist,” the mystical body of Satan.

The mystical body of Satan has been working since the earliest days of the church. (1 John 4) and the “Antichrist”, this fervent spirit of rebellion permeating the populace, can be summed up as every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.

This spirit of rebellion alleges that Jesus had something that we don’t have, that He was divine, that He didn’t have lusts and desires as a natural man, and therefore, He couldn’t actually sin.

Hollywood stars

Hollywood stars Mark Ruffalo, Olivia Wilde and Michael Moore led protesters to Trump Tower after the president made comments about the deadly violence in Charlottesville.

That’s  what Hollywood and and the secular humanist coreligionists would have us believe. Christ couldn’t sin because He was special, but we just can’t help ourselves and we are really rather nice people dontcha know?

And anyway, Christ is my buddy, he is all about mercy and forgiveness and get along go along … huh?

But if we believe what’s written in Scripture, Christ had the same flesh and blood that we have. “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same.” Hebrews 2:14.

He had the same lusts and desires, which caused Him to be tempted, and He had to fight to keep from sinning. He had the Holy Spirit to guide Him, and strength and help from His Father in heaven.

Because of His life and His sacrifice He made the same available to us, and therefore we are able to follow Him on the way that He opened up through the flesh and back to the Father, as members of “The Mystical Body of Christ”.

Halloween Party ...

Halloween Party …

But many folks really don’t want to discipline themselves, many folks have no inclination to rein in their worship of self.

As a culture we strongly resist having to put in the effort, take up the same battle that Christ did. Saint Paul explains in great detail that we don’t want to fight against the tendency towards sin that we have in our human nature.

It seems that nowadays, and perhaps it’s been like this in all times, most people, the masses, aren’t willing to fight hard against human nature, the unbridled concupiscence of our flesh. And the result is the ascendancy of the spirit of the Antichrist.

Lust

Just a fashion show … the 7 deadly sins …

This spirit of concupiscence shows people an easier way to exist, a way of self gratification and taking the easy path. The spirit of Antichrist allows the sins that separate us from God to live on by covering them with tolerance, “love”, and freedom.

God’s word clearly states what is right and wrong, what is sinful and what is pure. But when enough people live in sin, for instance adultery, sodomy, pornography, fornication, murder, and so on and so forth, our society gives it a pass. Sin is no longer considered sin, it is considered a “right”.

Our western “civilization” sports a population who are indoctrinated almost from birth in a system of beliefs in which  God’s laws are rejected, and the laws of society, and eventually even the laws of the nations, change to accommodate this adjusted view of what is right and wrong.

For just one example, how did murdering children and elders and other inconvenient people move from a crime punishable by death to a generally accepted right under the sobriquet of “choice”?  Anyone?  Anyone? The mystical body of Satan, the Antichrist, in action I guess.

So impurity and sin are allowed to live, and mankind grows farther and farther away from God – which is exactly Satan’s intention. The majority of the world has given over to this spirit, because it allows them to live comfortably, without a guilty conscience.

Waiting On The Night To Fall”, by “Casting Crowns”, from the album “Thrive” (2014).

“Waiting on the Night to Fall” is a great tune by “Casting Crowns”, I added the lyrics to the tune in my next post “Christ and Antichrist … (part 3)”, in case anyone is interested. But now, back to the subject , the Antichrist in tis world …

This is the mystical body of Satan in action in the world right now. This is “The Antichrist” … this is the “Not Christ”. “Devil’s Advocate”, released in 1997, was an American supernatural horror film directed by Taylor Hackford, written by Jonathan Lemkin and Tony Gilroy, and starring Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, and Charlize Theron. The film did a pretty good job shining a light on “the spirit of the times”.

Mankind is more and more reliant on itself and being governed by itself and worshiping itself in an orgy of narcissistic self gratification, rather than being led by any “higher power.”

Albert Jay Nock

The mass of man, the masses, in the famous words of Albert Jay Nock who wrote (in “Our Enemy The State”) in the 30’s, the following observation:

There is, for example, no human right, natural or Constitutional, that we have not seen nullified by the United States Government. Of all the crimes that are committed for gain or revenge, there is not one that we have not seen it commit – murder, mayhem, arson, robbery, fraud, criminal collusion and connivance.”   Albert Jay Nock, from Our Enemy, the State

These days, in the west, which used to be known as “Western Civilization”, Nock’s mass of mankind, “the masses”,  now believe, in the spirit of the Antichrist, that mankind can accomplish anything.

When that belief is fully realized then Satan will finally have what he has always wanted. Seen or unseen, acknowledged or not, Satan will have control of a world that has no need for God.

Once the mystical body of Satan, “The Antichrist” has free reign then there will be a terrible time on the earth. The true, evil nature of the Antichrist, the mystical body of Satan will be revealed.

Awww, Mom … Are we there yet?

Cheers

Joe

El Humanismo Secular es Pecado – Part 4

(continued from previous post)

Screwtape must be laughing all the way home, ” I will not serve!”, indeed!  I think of Al Pacino’s last line in “Devil’s Advocate” : …”AAAH! Pride is my favorite sin!” …

The beliefs of Secular Humanist Progressivism, which say, “It does not matter what you believe—or whether you believe anything at all”, could be held without noticeably disastrous results by even the majority of people in our present society, so long as the majority of people in our society were also still practicing the old traditional (read “true,” “Catholic”) moral customs (see the “rift” mentioned in previous post) . These traditions, based on the revealed truths of God and adherence to the Natural Law, enabled our society to function reasonably well.  In other words, what you do is more important than what you say. Another version of that is “By their works shall you know them.”

But now, in 2015, with so many people having lost touch with any reasons for morality and goodness, we live in a situation where most of these customs have been abandoned by a huge majority of our society, and the result is extreme social disorder. It is only when the present disorder impacted in our personal affairs, with, rapes, murders, broken marriages, muggings, drugs, people going berserk in mass shootings or running crowds down with their cars, or school shootings, or family murder suicides, or blowing up buildings, prostitution, pornography, child abuse, corruption in business and especially in government, etc. that ordinary folks (the masses) began to ask: “WHAT IS WRONG?!” The masses do not understand philosophy, let alone the bad effects that a bad philosophy can have. Most folks are not equipped to delve into the foundations of the moral order. They just go with the flow. These widespread effects of immoral philosophy must impact their lives directly before they cry out, “What is wrong?!”

Well, Gentle Reader, “What is wrong” is what has already been wrong for a very long time in the thinking of our culture. They no longer believe the truth. They abandoned it starting in 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the chapel door at Wittenberg and initiated his revolt against the True Faith and a unified Catholic society. They jettisoned the Revealed Religion of God, like teenagers vandalizing the family home by throwing a block party while their parents were away. “Home Alone” was a funny movie but the act of rebelling against truth and order destroys the very foundation of civil society itself, not to mention the infinitely more important matter of abandoning the one and only vehicle of their eternal salvation. And it was mostly these people who came to North America to escape the established order and founded our current North American culture. The first culture in history that worshiped the supreme individual.

Catholic moral customs inherited from centuries of Catholic and Roman civilization survived until the decade of the 1960’s.  In the 60’s the rot of secular humanist progressivism exploded at an alarming rate courtesy of the new permissive immorality of the movie industry, and the secular broadcast and print media who prepared the social garden for people finally to abandon the traditional Catholic moral customs. This abandonment of order for hedonism and personal licentiousness was precipitated during the 1960’s by the advent of the birth control pill. This released society from all the traditional restrictions related to family and child bearing and proclaimed a new era of “freedom”.

This freedom was  accompanied by the full court press of the movie and print industry in portraying on the screen and in magazines all manner of immoral behavior and encouraging fornication, pedophilia, adultery, murder and all sorts of revolting violence. As any one who reads history can tell, there is nothing new under the sun in the nature and types of human perversity and deviance but the massive barrage of encouragement and removal of restraint embraced by the media resulted in a general disintegration of sexual morality, pandemic infidelity, a meteoric rise in divorce, dramatic increases in STD’s (by one definition life is a fatal STD) and finally the abortion of generations of children in the name of “choice”.

http://www.numberofabortions.com/

Top this all off with the alarming increase in drug abuse, and the rest of human morals simply disintegrated. This is the scenario we have personally witnessed in just the past 60 years! The personal fabric of our lives and experiences of “modernism” as a sad tale indeed. The discussion here is not academic. The collapse of Catholic customs has taken place only recently, within the lifetimes of many of us. The result will destroy what little is left of our civilization.

This root of the collapse is the result of Protestantism. The Reformation was the great civil war of Christianity and the Catholic Church lost because it had itself abandoned the right and permitted myriad abuses, rather similar to where we see the church today with it’s scandals and progressive reforms and all the other trappings of the modernist leprosy. Protestantism gave birth to Modernism when it embraced private interpretation of the Bible. With the Protestant Revolt from revealed truth and the divinely established authority in the person and office of the Pope in Rome, everyone became his own little pope.

These people could not abide one man’s being “infallible” (not a Catholic claim but a Protestant fantasy and rationalization) , a man who held the divine commission from Jesus Christ Himself, when He said to St. Peter, “I say to thee: that thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys to the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven” (Matt. 16:18-20). These people could not abide this one man’s being infallible (ignoring the minor inconvenient fact of the concept of  “ex cathedra“), whose authority exists only within the strictly defined limits of a tightly bound 2,000 year old universally known tradition, all the while being guided by the Holy Spirit, the “Paraclete” whom Christ had sent. These people could not accept this sort of God assisted, worldwide, visible, tightly constrained teacher.

These people could and DID accept, and continue to this day to accept, THEMSELVES(!) as the infallible, unfailing, inerrant rule of faith and morals (rather like Eve in the Garden – they would become as gods, the sole judge and arbiter of right truth each one their own little mirror of godliness). These people, the masses, who are often mental pygmies in theoretical matters, uninstructed in theology and philosophy, poorly informed, busy with practical affairs, weak, sick and all of that; they themselves are the only, the one, the true and infallible authority which they will accept! Only themselves!  God preserve us from such pathological narcissism!
