So another short post on our local personal heath situation, progress, and newly discovered information. I summarized the sequence of health and medical developments over the last two years in this post here.
I have continued to maintain my healthy non-diabetic insulin levels and over the last 6 months while experimenting with what to eat and how often to eat, I have only gained back 5 pounds of the initial 40 pounds I lost since January 2017.
I am still targeting another 40 pound of weight loss to put me under 200 pounds, but slowly. The area I have been most working on lately is figuring out what are the best foods for that large part of the time when one is actually not fasting.
I touch on some of my discoveries in this post here. The rest of the time I have been crawling down the rabbit hole of what passes for conventional generally accepted nutrition wisdom amongst the various “health” authorities in North America, with all their guidelines and recommendations.
I have also been looking into the magical mystery tour of the religion of Veganism, honestly, with much amazement. There are as many flakes on the ground in the Vegan universe as there are in a good old northern blizzard. So far I can boil down hundreds of pages and thousands of words and opinions and beliefs into:
- 1. Certain biological compounds are essential to health in humans.
- 2. Those compounds exist in both the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom.
- 3. Those essential compounds existing in plants are biologically inaccessible to the human digestive system and so unavailable in therapeutic levels (humans can’t digest them).
- 4. There are poisons and toxic substances in many plants which actually defend against the plants being eaten by humans. These plant poisons don’t get mentioned in Vegan literature.
- 5. Those biologically essential compounds existing in animals are freely and easily available to the human digestive system – they are “bio-available” and are easily digested.
Another fact is emerging in all this investigation, namely that animal based foods are expensive to produce, and plant based foods are cheap to produce. There is an apparent huge profit incentive to divert world populations over to plant based foods from animal based foods.
This profit incentive seems to accrue to both the huge multinational food production conglomerates and to governments everywhere in increasing tax revenues and imposing social policy and control. There appear to be huge benefits to multinationals and governments in having malnourished, sick, stupid, compliant customer and voter populations as long as those populations are not too sick to work.
Dr. Georgia Edes, MD’s analysis of the “eat-lancets-plant-based-planet” study makes for fascinating reading (see link here and below) and is absolutely worth the time it takes to read the whole thing. Anyway …

Truly, one has to own the search to make the search. No matter how unhealthy and unhappy we might be we need to want to find a new way ourselves before we are motivated to make the needed changes.

Well, as you may be aware, I work in healthcare, and find myself dealing professionally every day with many unhealthy people, some of whom are dieing as a result of their dietary choices.
Sadly, I have found that many people would literally rather die than give up foods and lifestyles that are provably killing them. In some ways the topic of diet has much in common with political views and religious beliefs.
Folks don’t seem to be much interested in evidence, its all about faith and authority and being in the right group, even if the beliefs are killing you.
As we have heard, you can lead a horse to water and all that … I have been following up in detail about how diet has a direct impact on health and the connections between our most common diseases these days and what we eat. I have made myself my own “n of 1” clinical trial here in the shire.
Personally we are in the low carb/keto camp but continue to investigate looking for actual evidence based results. Here are a couple of links to interesting articles about recent anti-low carb outbursts by the established (and threatened) health authorities in North America. As you all know, I have been doing this since January 2017. Along the way I have “cured” my diabetes, and high blood pressure, as well as dramatically reducing joint inflammation (Arthritis?).
Almost incidentally along the way I have lost 40 pounds, with 40 more to go as a target albeit slowly and gradually – fast changes don’t stick but slow and steady seems to be the way.
I understand that everyone has to make up their own minds about what to believe and how happy they are with their physical health status quo.
And folks also have to make up their own minds about the reliability and trustworthiness of established academic organizations (researchers) healthcare organizations (NGO’s and departments) and government agencies (like Canada Health & The Canada Food Guide people).
I guess the bottom line is the reliability of the authorities we accept, which range from chance conversations in the coffeehouse or the supermarket all the way up to major double blind multinational studies and research efforts. We need to think about our sources.
So, if you are completely happy with your current health, and you sincerely believe that the above mentioned organizations and authorities are truly interested only in our well-being, then don’t worry, be happy.
