The Inner Struggle

Humility & Humiliation …

An old ditty goes something like this: “Love & Marriage go together like a horse and carriage”. This is redolent of a ancient age when “Love” was caring and sacrificial, willing the good of the loved one.

Our current usage of “love” mostly implies some sort of justification for fornication and the exploitation of sex objects for self gratification. We accessorize members of the attractive “sex”, whatever their biological alignment, or genetic configuration based on how good they look  with us or “how they make me feel”.

Or we pick a paramour based on the current “Flavour Du Jour” in our social circle, our Facebook group, or as a form of virtue signalling according to whichever politically correct legislation just emerged from the dung heap called “Parliament”,

And we embrace whatever drum the media are currently beating … we need to “fit in”, right? And if our accessory no longer “fits in” then it’s time to trade “it” in for something fresher.

And, Humility and Humiliation go together as well, for how is one to learn true humility without humiliation? Many souls desire to be humble, but few desire humiliation. Many souls pray to be made humble “place in me a humble and contrite heart” … but very few want to be humiliated.

Humility is truth. So, we should admit to ourselves that we possess nothing of ourselves except sin,  and so it is just and righteous that we receive humiliation and scorn. If we believed this truth we would accept it as truly just that all would humiliate us and treat us without consideration and despise us.

What honor and consideration does one deserve who has offended his Creator? Even a single venial sin is more deplorable and worthy of more contempt than the most miserable earthly condition, the poorest and lowest station in life.

And so we travel along through life on our merry way, loving ourselves infinitely,  believing sincerely that we are practically perfect in every way, that we are good, that we deserve to be treated well, even better than most others.

The result of such insulation from reality is that in our cosmic self love we interpret every correction, contradiction, every humiliation and comment detracting from our self perceived perfection as a personal attack deserving of the most fervent counterattack, the source of our discomfort must be put down, terminated, hopefully never to rise to sully our self regard again.

And in that self-referential state of faith in our own perfection we destroy totally any and every possibility of growth. We are already perfect. We choose to bask in our own perfection and reject God’s gentle reproof coming to us in the guise of other’s unhappiness with our actions.

We choose to go down the perfect wide path to eternal damnation because we cannot accept correction in any form. And lest, in our self absorption we forget, we need to understand that morality goes beyond the bedroom, to embrace every moment of our social and public lives. Lest we forget … Lest we forget.

There is no possibility of improvement in a soul that rejects all correction and humiliation. But God brings good out of even this evil.

The place where these “perfect” souls interact with others, the interface of personal relations, provide the perfect opportunity for others, more aware of and sensitive to God’s call, to accept humiliation and to practice genuine humility.

It is a true treasure to be offered the opportunity to practice genuine charity and humility, all the  while compensating in the normal train of events for the casual incompetence and even  malice of others, to practice keeping others safe and comfortable in spite of their own ignorance, incompetence, ingratitude, and slovenly self worship.

And to do all this in spite of receiving scorn and denigration and belittlement for rendering this selfless service in such a routine way that it is taken totally for granted by the recipients, their natural due flowing from their exalted state of perfection,.

Presumably, after enough practice, one can even reach a state of charitable love of the other and not resent the recurring instances of chaos needing to be forever and again repaired, fixed up, cleaned up, provided for, anticipated and planned for future rescue efforts.

To charitably accept the utter obliviousness of the perpetrators of the mess and chaos when their utter lack of caring about anything except their self image spreads the chaos far and wide like some apocalyptic tsunami of trouble.

And mostly even malice is absent in this unaware ignorance. Lacking culpability in the obliviousness of daily life, can one even really identify this as sinful?

This “trouble” ranges from all the trivial rotting garbage of uncaring slights and messes left behind for others to deal with at the lowest levels of the ladder of perfection, to the rampant murder of innocents and corruption of the masses for the utility of the elite which we witness every day at the highest levels of this evil of self worship, this pride in self.

If one is unaware of the consequences and misery resulting from one’s actions, if one sincerely “doesn’t mean it”, then is remorse, penitence and correction even possible? If we are “sinless” through lack of culpability then are the narcissists actually right in their belief?

Endless opportunities for humiliation and the practice of humility, true humility. “Bear your humiliation patiently, for man is tried in this crucible as gold in the fire” (Sir 2, 4-5)

Eeyore has a poor opinion of most of the other animals in the Forest, describing them as having “No brain at all, some of them”, “only grey fluff that’s blown into their heads by mistake” (from chapter 1 of The House at Pooh Corner).

Eeyore’s favorite food is thistles. He lives in the southeast corner of the Hundred Acre Wood, in an area labeled “Eeyore’s Gloomy Place: Rather Boggy and Sad” on the map in the book.

He has a stick house therein called The House at Pooh Corner. Pooh and Piglet built it for him after accidentally mistaking the original house that Eeyore built for a pile of sticks.

It is fairly common knowledge that Canada has had a “special” relationship with various Asian regimes (including the old Soviet empire) for going on 45 years now. Nothing has changed and in fact things have only gotten chummier lately.

In this post we are thinking about the moral and logical questions inherent in the modernist philosophy exemplified by the statement  “I’m OK, Your OK”. In our relativistic PC modern English culture how does a person  distinguish between acts which are generally wrong but might be OK [usually for oneself!] in special circumstances; and acts [usually which other people do!] which really are always wrong?

Mao and Trudeau

Chairman Mao and Canadian Prim Minister Pierre Trudeau had a famously cordial relationship.

Here in the west (Canada, the U.S. and most of Europe), things have reached a point where it has become impossible to even talk about right and wrong because the language of discussion has been perverted and contaminated such that words no longer even mean what they once meant.

Any serious discussion is brushed aside by our

leadership and rendered subject to the judgements of our Star Chamber Human Rights Commissions under the catch-all category of “Hate Crimes”, reserved for those who disagree with the wisdom of the leadership and their pet groups.

Truly, it has been accurately observed that people’s disposition, views and inclinations are revealed by the company they keep and the people and philosophies they support. This has certainly been the case for Canada’s long string of Socialist governments.

Mao, Bulganin, Stalin, Ulbricht, Tsedenbal

There is an interesting piece by another blogger over at “Orwell Today”. “In the late 70s, having not that long ago returned from travelling and working around the world (and being particularly amazed by Afghanistan), I was horrified when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979. I was happy when President Carter announced that the United States would stop sending grain to the USSR in the hopes of starving them into pulling out their troops. But for the grain embargo to be effective, all other Western nations would ALSO have to stop sending grain.

Like Father, Like Son

I remember how ashamed I was of Canada when our Prime Minister – the Red-Chinese and abortion-loving Pierre Trudeaurefused to stop shipments of our wheat to the USSR. It seemed strange to me then, as it does now, how friendly our government was toward the Soviet Union, that we would keep on sending them food even though they were seeking world domination over free and democratic nations.

Remember “Fuddle-Duddle? Like Father, Like Son.

But the bitter truth is that all the modern western systems for judging right and wrong which developed since  the moral and societal upheavals of the 1960s fall under the condemnation of the teaching of Saint John Paul II’s encyclical “Veritatis Splendor. Quite simply, S John Paul II taught that there are some things which are inherently and always wrong. (Para 80; intrinsece malum). The Catholic Church has always taught that there are are subjective circumstances in which the subjective guilt of an individual may be attenuated; but the act itself remains always wrong.

People talk about incrementalism … step by step … or about making the best of a bad situation … or discerning elements of good in an otherwise wrong context … and in Canada this has become almost our national sport (after hockey), but we really should apply an appropriate test to these statements. How about a test like: “Would you say that to a perpetrator of genocide? Would you say that to pedophiles like the members of NAMBLA, or a sadist, or a zoophiliac, or a necrophiliac? What if the necrophiliac enjoys creating his own fresh bodies in order to enjoy his passion?” There are endless likely tests of this sort.

I knew one of these sort of individuals personally back when I worked in our prison system where he was doing time for murder, but in a curiously Canadian twist he had never been charged with any crime for the necrophilia, just the murders (multiple). I guess necrophilia is OK in Canada as long as one does not personally kill the bodies one is indulging one’s passions with? I knew another fellow who was doing time for multiple murder but not for the cannibalism after the murders. WOW!  So Canadian, eh? We dare not be “judgemental”.

O Earth O Earth Return”, Bill Douglas.

And even the “murders” are touch and go here in Canada depending on the “category” of person you fall into. After the last round of Trudeau Liberal legislation, now Babies, Seniors, and the Handicapped are fair game and the programs get government funding to carry our the “Final Solution” for these inconvenient persons. But we can’t even have a discussion about the right or wrong of these sorts of things.

I heard on American media that 22,000 people demonstrated against this legislation on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Strangely, the Canadian Media didn’t mention anything, it’s like it never happened for Canadians who don’t follow outside media. The CBC, CTV, and Macleans  Magazine, as the self proclaimed voice of Canadians, have pretty much sewn up the market for what Canadians are allowed to think, and no-one questions it.

The apparent Canadian popular opinion about folks who object to Canada’s Holocaust is pretty much summed up as scathingly wrong right wing nutz by the Bright Light Liberal Intellectual writing a popular blog found at  Dammit Janet. Given the caliber of writing, and many stylish similarities he/she/it/other probably also writes for, or used to write for, “Being Liberal“, another popular Facebook site which I have mentioned before.

My including these links in no way implies that I in any way remotely endorse the material appearing at these sites but only as illustrative examples of what we are up against when trying to discuss morality and the significant lack thereof in our modern English society.

These days, few people have the remotest understanding of logic, and we would get totally irrelevant but extremely angry objections to a test like that above. I can think of any number of replies which would go something like this “Are you saying that remarried divorcees (aka habitual fornicators and adulterers) are as bad as Nazis?” Or something like: “Are you saying that homosexuals are all pedophiles?”.

Of course that isn’t what we are saying at all. We are simply saying: if you don’t agree that adultery, or fornication, or sodomy, or other homosexual interactions (with or without children involved), are always, in themselves, wrong, OK, I won’t try to prevent you from having your own views; but then, by the same logic, who are you to say that there is ANY other act which is in itself always wrong?

If we can’t tell you that sex between “remarried” divorcees is, in itself, intrinsically wrong, why are you entitled to tell a pedophile or a necrophiliac that what he does is, in itself, intrinsically wrong? If one were able to get this point over to the sort of people to whom we refer, they might very well reply [you often hear something along these lines] “Ah, but what they do harms others; what I do doesn’t” (another ‘consequentialist’ approach condemned in “Veritatis splendor”).

This at least opens up the possibility of suggesting that, for example, the serial habitual adultery [“remarriage after divorce”] of modern societies does harm others; and of arguing that there are, for example, recorded societies, such as aristocratic societies in some Greek cities, where institutionalized pederasty was not perceived to harm its ‘victims’.

The above was derived from a post by Fr John Hunwicke.

The sad proof of the thesis here is that the movement to legalize and “normalize” homosexuality and pedophilia has in the last few years gone increasingly public and mainstream. The fact is, the mainstreaming of homosexual “marriage” was never just about homosexuality. It was always about the Progressive’s attack on the very idea of human nature, of human beings with inherent rights and dignity.  The abandonment of even Natural Law in our modern English society is deeply disturbing, for it is nothing less than a full court press to deny that the human individual has inherent rights and characteristics by virtue of our humanity, in fact it is a very explicit attempt to subordinate to the Secular Progressive will the very things which make us human.

El Humanismo Secular es Pecado – Part 4

(continued from previous post)

Screwtape must be laughing all the way home, ” I will not serve!”, indeed!  I think of Al Pacino’s last line in “Devil’s Advocate” : …”AAAH! Pride is my favorite sin!” …

The beliefs of Secular Humanist Progressivism, which say, “It does not matter what you believe—or whether you believe anything at all”, could be held without noticeably disastrous results by even the majority of people in our present society, so long as the majority of people in our society were also still practicing the old traditional (read “true,” “Catholic”) moral customs (see the “rift” mentioned in previous post) . These traditions, based on the revealed truths of God and adherence to the Natural Law, enabled our society to function reasonably well.  In other words, what you do is more important than what you say. Another version of that is “By their works shall you know them.”

But now, in 2015, with so many people having lost touch with any reasons for morality and goodness, we live in a situation where most of these customs have been abandoned by a huge majority of our society, and the result is extreme social disorder. It is only when the present disorder impacted in our personal affairs, with, rapes, murders, broken marriages, muggings, drugs, people going berserk in mass shootings or running crowds down with their cars, or school shootings, or family murder suicides, or blowing up buildings, prostitution, pornography, child abuse, corruption in business and especially in government, etc. that ordinary folks (the masses) began to ask: “WHAT IS WRONG?!” The masses do not understand philosophy, let alone the bad effects that a bad philosophy can have. Most folks are not equipped to delve into the foundations of the moral order. They just go with the flow. These widespread effects of immoral philosophy must impact their lives directly before they cry out, “What is wrong?!”

Well, Gentle Reader, “What is wrong” is what has already been wrong for a very long time in the thinking of our culture. They no longer believe the truth. They abandoned it starting in 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the chapel door at Wittenberg and initiated his revolt against the True Faith and a unified Catholic society. They jettisoned the Revealed Religion of God, like teenagers vandalizing the family home by throwing a block party while their parents were away. “Home Alone” was a funny movie but the act of rebelling against truth and order destroys the very foundation of civil society itself, not to mention the infinitely more important matter of abandoning the one and only vehicle of their eternal salvation. And it was mostly these people who came to North America to escape the established order and founded our current North American culture. The first culture in history that worshiped the supreme individual.

Catholic moral customs inherited from centuries of Catholic and Roman civilization survived until the decade of the 1960’s.  In the 60’s the rot of secular humanist progressivism exploded at an alarming rate courtesy of the new permissive immorality of the movie industry, and the secular broadcast and print media who prepared the social garden for people finally to abandon the traditional Catholic moral customs. This abandonment of order for hedonism and personal licentiousness was precipitated during the 1960’s by the advent of the birth control pill. This released society from all the traditional restrictions related to family and child bearing and proclaimed a new era of “freedom”.

This freedom was  accompanied by the full court press of the movie and print industry in portraying on the screen and in magazines all manner of immoral behavior and encouraging fornication, pedophilia, adultery, murder and all sorts of revolting violence. As any one who reads history can tell, there is nothing new under the sun in the nature and types of human perversity and deviance but the massive barrage of encouragement and removal of restraint embraced by the media resulted in a general disintegration of sexual morality, pandemic infidelity, a meteoric rise in divorce, dramatic increases in STD’s (by one definition life is a fatal STD) and finally the abortion of generations of children in the name of “choice”.

http://www.numberofabortions.com/

Top this all off with the alarming increase in drug abuse, and the rest of human morals simply disintegrated. This is the scenario we have personally witnessed in just the past 60 years! The personal fabric of our lives and experiences of “modernism” as a sad tale indeed. The discussion here is not academic. The collapse of Catholic customs has taken place only recently, within the lifetimes of many of us. The result will destroy what little is left of our civilization.

This root of the collapse is the result of Protestantism. The Reformation was the great civil war of Christianity and the Catholic Church lost because it had itself abandoned the right and permitted myriad abuses, rather similar to where we see the church today with it’s scandals and progressive reforms and all the other trappings of the modernist leprosy. Protestantism gave birth to Modernism when it embraced private interpretation of the Bible. With the Protestant Revolt from revealed truth and the divinely established authority in the person and office of the Pope in Rome, everyone became his own little pope.

These people could not abide one man’s being “infallible” (not a Catholic claim but a Protestant fantasy and rationalization) , a man who held the divine commission from Jesus Christ Himself, when He said to St. Peter, “I say to thee: that thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys to the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven” (Matt. 16:18-20). These people could not abide this one man’s being infallible (ignoring the minor inconvenient fact of the concept of  “ex cathedra“), whose authority exists only within the strictly defined limits of a tightly bound 2,000 year old universally known tradition, all the while being guided by the Holy Spirit, the “Paraclete” whom Christ had sent. These people could not accept this sort of God assisted, worldwide, visible, tightly constrained teacher.

These people could and DID accept, and continue to this day to accept, THEMSELVES(!) as the infallible, unfailing, inerrant rule of faith and morals (rather like Eve in the Garden – they would become as gods, the sole judge and arbiter of right truth each one their own little mirror of godliness). These people, the masses, who are often mental pygmies in theoretical matters, uninstructed in theology and philosophy, poorly informed, busy with practical affairs, weak, sick and all of that; they themselves are the only, the one, the true and infallible authority which they will accept! Only themselves!  God preserve us from such pathological narcissism!
