Life in a small town

Detaching From the Day-to-Day

Snow”, by Kobudo, from the album “Ototabi”  (2013).

-20 Celsius, and blowing cold from the Northeast. Not a nice day to go for a walk. After a relatively warm winter so far today seems quite bone chilling, almost as cold as I remember the Arctic being back in the 80’s.

Briefly glanced over recent Facebook posts while sipping my first coffee this AM – around 5:00 AM today, and briefly felt submerged in a sea of futility and despair. Scandal and rationalization everywhere. Folks disappointed with the status quo, disappointed with their physical existence, their mental existence, the existence of those who don’t agree with whatever they have decided is the reason for their problems. Folks trying everything under the sun to reconfigure reality to some form of congruence with their own self image and world view.

I thought about how comforting it is to detach from all this temporal worry and dissatisfaction and just focus on eternity. Life after death is really a win-win.  If you are right about it and you have behaved yourself according to the Manufacturers Instructions,  in a decent upright manner, then eternal life looks pretty good.  If you are wrong about it, you might have missed out on some excitement, but it just doesn’t matter, because then you are dead and nothing matters anymore.

As far as I can tell, the only fly in that ointment is the ineffable lightness of being amongst fence sitters reacting to  FOMO.

Cheers

Joe
