… If … “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose“ …part 1

Winter is coming. It has been snowing all day. Its only September 13th. Blahhh!  A Facebook meme:  Mother Nature: “It is not possible to have all seasons in one week!”  Alberta: “Hold My Beer!”

I guess this effort will be part one, of I don’t know how many parts, over how many days, dealing with the current media scrum relating to misbehavior and crime on the part of nominally catholic prelates of the highest rank.

Pope Francis and Scalfari

Pope Francis and Eugenio Scalfari

What a mess, its what PF likes to call a “lio”. Speaking extemporaneously he likes to encourage others, like young fans, to “Start a “Lio! Make a big ruckus!”. Well, Pope Francis wanted a “lio” and now he has got himself a nice big “lio”.

His problem is that he didn’t expect it to be in his courtyard and his publicists have dropped the ball big time. Where is Eugenio Scalfari when one needs him?

I guess PF didn’t understand that his darling media friends are not his friends, they just want blood, whether it’s PF’s enemies blood or his own blood doesn’t matter to the media devils.

So now we are expecting a big bishop’s conference to … to what? To deal with the problem that has come up? I wonder how that will play?  And really, truly none of this matters.

This is the long defeat, mentioned by J.R.R. Tolkien who expressed this well in his stories. Borrowing somewhat from the Norse mythos of the “twilight of the gods,” the Elves of Middle-earth fight what they call “the long defeat,” both against the evil forces of Morgoth and Sauron, and against the decay of all things.

The immortal elves themselves do not age, but as the world around them does, it wearies them. Thus great elf-lords like Elrond and Galadriel use their power to preserve their havens of timelessness, Rivendell and Lothlorien.

Tolkien wrote in his letters that this was not simply a story convention, but a basic belief of his, derived from his Catholic faith. He wrote:  “Actually I am a Christian, and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect ‘history’ to be anything but a ‘long defeat’— though it contains (and in legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory. (Letters, 255)”

“Quid Hoc Ad Aeternitatem”.

If mankind were actually holy, as his Creator commands him to be:  1 Peter, 1: 15  then the current crisis in the Roman church would not exist.

Rome

Rome

We have a crisis today because we did not and do not strive to be holy, and this has been a human constant since long before Christ and the Catholic Church came into the world.

Rather, we always strive to do whatever we want, whenever we want, as often as we want, and then rationalize why its OK for us to do what we want. This is so even though there are many rules of behaviour for everyone else, and our one article of faith is that the rules do not apply to us.  And now we are ruled by Pandemonium, are we not?

And if anyone does object to our current peccadillo, we belittle, discredit, and attack our detractors with all manner of ad-hominum character assassinations, or if that doesn’t scare them away we deny, deny, deny, and shove the blame off onto any handy scapegoat we can lay hands on. Everyone does that, right? And all right minded people know this to be true.

Or if the rules do actually apply to us then we change the rules … most of the current “sexual misconduct” incidents reported in the current spate of media frenzy, something in the order of 80% to 90%, actually involve adult males indulging in mutual attraction, lust, and drug use. This is now legal in most western nations so what’s the big deal? Whatever … the real crime here is the breach of trust and the subsequent coverups at all levels.

This sort of behaviour has been very much the norm in our current polite progressive culture, which flagrantly does whatever it wants every day around us and has done pretty much all my life.

Oh Canada … why should we be hypocritically pretending to be shocked or upset by some inappropriate diddling in another elite management hierarchy in the good old US of A, eh?

It doesn’t matter the brand or the organization, senior bureaucrats are all highly susceptible to temptation and corruption. They place high value on the perks of power, have a lot to lose, and are very willing to compromise, go along to get along, especially if they have no particular faith except in themselves.

And everyone does it, right? Didn’t the Elder Trudeau, way back in 1967, begin that round of charades with his famous line “The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation“?

Then-Justice Minister Pierre Trudeau (Justin’s old dad) was everywhere a media darling when he introduced modernizing reforms to the Criminal Code1 in 1967 that decriminalized homosexual acts. It’s now cool to be a tool.

Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky on February 28 1997

Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, February 28 1997

None of this is in any way new and shocking. These sort of things have been going on within and without, both society at large and all churches pretty much since the day that  churches and politics came into existence.

What about Billery and Intern-Gate? Ever hear of Profumo? Corrupted power always turns to abuse and eventually to sacrifice to their chosen god. At least Bill and John were into girls … seems that is not so exciting any more.

This whole bucket of filth, along with a serious dearth of answers from ecclesial authority figures, was a huge part of why I left the Roman Catholic Church as a youth back in 1969 … Vatican II and the “Spirit of Vatican II” and never ending homosexual sex scandals … No more trustworthy authorities …

No cred, no cred, no cred,  so I decided, in my know-it-all 16 year old mind, that I would Do It My Way!  First of all, let’s observe that no 16 year old boy even has something resembling a mind, and secondly, “doing it my way” is the penultimate foundation of all Liberal Progressive evil in the world. The 60’s were just our generation’s edition of the book which humans have been writing since there were humans on the planet.

I returned across the Tiber about 25 years go after exhausting all avenues looking for Truth – no other religion or political system had it.  Not Communism, not Fascism, not Zen Buddhism , not Shinto, not Democracy or Socialism, … Monarchy had a clue but only in the context of being under God. But where is the Truth?

Christ and Christ’s Church is the sole repository of Truth regardless of the corrupt and fallible sinners working within that church. It’s not about the human beings wading through the muck of corruption and perversion for their own ambitions. Its all about Eternal Truth.

Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (24 November 1808 – 29 September 1890)

Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (24 November 1808 – 29 September 1890)

plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose“, Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (24 November 1808 – 29 September 1890) was a French critic, journalist, and novelist. His epigrams are frequently quoted, and the first link line, plus ça change, is one of his best.

Another of Karr’s targets was a proposal of the period to abolish capital punishment, which injustice, that is capital punishment, was recently inveighed against by Pope Francis thusly: “Pope Francis has once again appeared to contradict two millennia of clear and consistent scriptural and Catholic teaching.

The Vatican has announced that the Catechism of the Catholic Church will be changed to declare the death penalty “inadmissible” given the “inviolability and dignity of the person” as understood “in the light of the Gospel.”

Karr’s acerbic opinion is “je veux bien que messieurs les assassins commencent” or “let the gentlemen who do the murders take the first step”, or “I wish the assassins to go first”, a view which I happen to share.

And, indeed, there is absolutely nothing new about deviant sexual shenanigans in the hierarchy of the Roman Church, and all the other western churches as well.

Here is just a short timeline to give us a better perspective not only on how serious the current crisis is but also on how often men and women, human souls, insist on pursuing their own diverse objectives in search of worldly pleasure and gratification.

Even before there was a real established Catholic Church we can start our little reminiscence. What was the societal norm before the Catholic Church? First, just a bit from St Paul’s Letter to the Romans:

St. Paul

St. Paul, Pieter Paul Rubens

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools,

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.

30They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.

32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

As in the pre-Christian world, so now in post Christian Canada … they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. These days, just you try to get nominated as a Liberal Candidate in any Canadian Federal election anywhere any time … HA!

Good luck with that unless of course you literally signed a statement, on the line, for Justin and the Liberal Party, affirming that you personally support killing babies and seniors and endorse putting your pecker into places it really shouldn’t be put EEEEWWWWW! Personally, and in writing. That’s Justin’s rules – you don’t like it …To Bad So Sad for you.

So, enough for this little post. Much to follow from St. John Chrysostom, the Medici Popes, The Avignon atrocity, St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Josemaria Escriva, St. John Paul II, St. Teresa of Calcutta, St. Clement, St. Alphonsus Liguori, Julian of Norwich.

And also from St. Thomas More, St. Francis de Sales, St. Isidore of Seville, St. John Vianney, St. Claude de la Colombiere, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Pio of Pietrelcina, etc. etc. and possibly others.

Not necessarily in that order but more or less progressing historically as things continued to develop and be preached against by the true practitioners of the One True Faith, unless, of course, I get sick of writing about all this evil BS or lose interest before I finish.

The one thing that all of this evil has in common is Human beings. Its a very good thing that ALL Humans die.

Now its Friday the 14th, and David Warren has a good post on the same theme but better written …

“A gentleman who wears the collar expresses surprise at the surprise. He has been wearing that collar for some time. He was in the seminary so long ago, that he can remember when the classes were taught in Latin. He has lived with degeneration in the Church since before Vatican II — has seen it all, and heard it all, and now he is seeing and hearing more.

“I find it hard to stomach all the misplaced surprise. I hear echoes of Genesis‎: ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ …

“Where were these alarmists as our children’s catechism was denuded, our altars disobediently despoiled, our Catholic institutions‎ demolished? … Catholic Children’s Aid, gone‎. … Catholic Hospitals, gone‎. … Catholic Schools, no longer Catholic. … Immigration Services for Catholic immigrants, gone. … Seminaries, not even a shadow of their former institutional selves. … Convents turned to condos. …

“As to clerics who lived lifestyles not in keeping with their calling: one would have had to ‎be a member of the Orange Lodge not to have rubbed shoulders with a multitude of them in the ’sixties and thereafter. …”

***

I’d guess it is appropriate to end this post with a small passage from John 6: 67-71.

67“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.

68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

70Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

This is, after all, and forever, Christ’s Church, and we believe that He is the Holy One of God.

Cheers

It is fairly common knowledge that Canada has had a “special” relationship with various Asian regimes (including the old Soviet empire) for going on 45 years now. Nothing has changed and in fact things have only gotten chummier lately.

In this post we are thinking about the moral and logical questions inherent in the modernist philosophy exemplified by the statement  “I’m OK, Your OK”. In our relativistic PC modern English culture how does a person  distinguish between acts which are generally wrong but might be OK [usually for oneself!] in special circumstances; and acts [usually which other people do!] which really are always wrong?

Mao and Trudeau

Chairman Mao and Canadian Prim Minister Pierre Trudeau had a famously cordial relationship.

Here in the west (Canada, the U.S. and most of Europe), things have reached a point where it has become impossible to even talk about right and wrong because the language of discussion has been perverted and contaminated such that words no longer even mean what they once meant.

Any serious discussion is brushed aside by our

Castro with Pierre and Margaret Trudeau

The Trudeau family had a close relationship with Fidel Castro and Canada resolutely maintained close ties to Cuba is spite of much international pressure.

leadership and rendered subject to the judgements of our Star Chamber Human Rights Commissions under the catch-all category of “Hate Crimes”, reserved for those who disagree with the wisdom of the leadership and their pet groups.

Truly, it has been accurately observed that people’s disposition, views and inclinations are revealed by the company they keep and the people and philosophies they support. This has certainly been the case for Canada’s long string of Socialist governments.

Mao,_Bulganin,_Stalin,_Ulbricht_Tsedenbal

Mao, Bulganin, Stalin, Ulbricht, Tsedenbal

There is an interesting piece by another blogger over at “Orwell Today”. “In the late 70s, having not that long ago returned from travelling and working around the world (and being particularly amazed by Afghanistan), I was horrified when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979. I was happy when President Carter announced that the United States would stop sending grain to the USSR in the hopes of starving them into pulling out their troops. But for the grain embargo to be effective, all other Western nations would ALSO have to stop sending grain.

Like Father, Like Son

I remember how ashamed I was of Canada when our Prime Minister – the Red-Chinese and abortion-loving Pierre Trudeaurefused to stop shipments of our wheat to the USSR. It seemed strange to me then, as it does now, how friendly our government was toward the Soviet Union, that we would keep on sending them food even though they were seeking world domination over free and democratic nations.

Justin_Trudea_F-bomb-marked

Remember “Fuddle-Duddle? Like Father, Like Son.

But the bitter truth is that all the modern western systems for judging right and wrong which developed since  the moral and societal upheavals of the 1960s fall under the condemnation of the teaching of Saint John Paul II’s encyclical “Veritatis Splendor. Quite simply, S John Paul II taught that there are some things which are inherently and always wrong. (Para 80; intrinsece malum). The Catholic Church has always taught that there are are subjective circumstances in which the subjective guilt of an individual may be attenuated; but the act itself remains always wrong.

People talk about incrementalism … step by step … or about making the best of a bad situation … or discerning elements of good in an otherwise wrong context … and in Canada this has become almost our national sport (after hockey), but we really should apply an appropriate test to these statements. How about a test like: “Would you say that to a perpetrator of genocide? Would you say that to pedophiles like the members of NAMBLA, or a sadist, or a zoophiliac, or a necrophiliac? What if the necrophiliac enjoys creating his own fresh bodies in order to enjoy his passion?” There are endless likely tests of this sort.

I knew one of these sort of individuals personally back when I worked in our prison system where he was doing time for murder, but in a curiously Canadian twist he had never been charged with any crime for the necrophilia, just the murders (multiple). I guess necrophilia is OK in Canada as long as one does not personally kill the bodies one is indulging one’s passions with? I knew another fellow who was doing time for multiple murder but not for the cannibalism after the murders. WOW!  So Canadian, eh? We dare not be “judgemental”.

O Earth O Earth Return”, Bill Douglas.

And even the “murders” are touch and go here in Canada depending on the “category” of person you fall into. After the last round of Trudeau Liberal legislation, now Babies, Seniors, and the Handicapped are fair game and the programs get government funding to carry our the “Final Solution” for these inconvenient persons. But we can’t even have a discussion about the right or wrong of these sorts of things.

I heard on American media that 22,000 people demonstrated against this legislation on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Strangely, the Canadian Media didn’t mention anything, it’s like it never happened for Canadians who don’t follow outside media. The CBC, CTV, and Macleans  Magazine, as the self proclaimed voice of Canadians, have pretty much sewn up the market for what Canadians are allowed to think, and no-one questions it.

The apparent Canadian popular opinion about folks who object to Canada’s Holocaust is pretty much summed up as scathingly wrong right wing nutz by the Bright Light Liberal Intellectual writing a popular blog found at  Dammit Janet. Given the caliber of writing, and many stylish similarities he/she/it/other probably also writes for, or used to write for, “Being Liberal“, another popular Facebook site which I have mentioned before.

My including these links in no way implies that I in any way remotely endorse the material appearing at these sites but only as illustrative examples of what we are up against when trying to discuss morality and the significant lack thereof in our modern English society.

These days, few people have the remotest understanding of logic, and we would get totally irrelevant but extremely angry objections to a test like that above. I can think of any number of replies which would go something like this “Are you saying that remarried divorcees (aka habitual fornicators and adulterers) are as bad as Nazis?” Or something like: “Are you saying that homosexuals are all pedophiles?”.

Of course that isn’t what we are saying at all. We are simply saying: if you don’t agree that adultery, or fornication, or sodomy, or other homosexual interactions (with or without children involved), are always, in themselves, wrong, OK, I won’t try to prevent you from having your own views; but then, by the same logic, who are you to say that there is ANY other act which is in itself always wrong?

If we can’t tell you that sex between “remarried” divorcees is, in itself, intrinsically wrong, why are you entitled to tell a pedophile or a necrophiliac that what he does is, in itself, intrinsically wrong? If one were able to get this point over to the sort of people to whom we refer, they might very well reply [you often hear something along these lines] “Ah, but what they do harms others; what I do doesn’t” (another ‘consequentialist’ approach condemned in “Veritatis splendor”).

This at least opens up the possibility of suggesting that, for example, the serial habitual adultery [“remarriage after divorce”] of modern societies does harm others; and of arguing that there are, for example, recorded societies, such as aristocratic societies in some Greek cities, where institutionalized pederasty was not perceived to harm its ‘victims’.

The above was derived from a post by Fr John Hunwicke.

The sad proof of the thesis here is that the movement to legalize and “normalize” homosexuality and pedophilia has in the last few years gone increasingly public and mainstream. The fact is, the mainstreaming of homosexual “marriage” was never just about homosexuality. It was always about the Progressive’s attack on the very idea of human nature, of human beings with inherent rights and dignity.  The abandonment of even Natural Law in our modern English society is deeply disturbing, for it is nothing less than a full court press to deny that the human individual has inherent rights and characteristics by virtue of our humanity, in fact it is a very explicit attempt to subordinate to the Secular Progressive will the very things which make us human.

El Humanismo Secular es Pecado – Part 4

(continued from previous post)

Screwtape must be laughing all the way home, ” I will not serve!”, indeed!  I think of Al Pacino’s last line in “Devil’s Advocate” : …”AAAH! Pride is my favorite sin!” …

The beliefs of Secular Humanist Progressivism, which say, “It does not matter what you believe—or whether you believe anything at all”, could be held without noticeably disastrous results by even the majority of people in our present society, so long as the majority of people in our society were also still practicing the old traditional (read “true,” “Catholic”) moral customs (see the “rift” mentioned in previous post) . These traditions, based on the revealed truths of God and adherence to the Natural Law, enabled our society to function reasonably well.  In other words, what you do is more important than what you say. Another version of that is “By their works shall you know them.”

But now, in 2015, with so many people having lost touch with any reasons for morality and goodness, we live in a situation where most of these customs have been abandoned by a huge majority of our society, and the result is extreme social disorder. It is only when the present disorder impacted in our personal affairs, with, rapes, murders, broken marriages, muggings, drugs, people going berserk in mass shootings or running crowds down with their cars, or school shootings, or family murder suicides, or blowing up buildings, prostitution, pornography, child abuse, corruption in business and especially in government, etc. that ordinary folks (the masses) began to ask: “WHAT IS WRONG?!” The masses do not understand philosophy, let alone the bad effects that a bad philosophy can have. Most folks are not equipped to delve into the foundations of the moral order. They just go with the flow. These widespread effects of immoral philosophy must impact their lives directly before they cry out, “What is wrong?!”

Well, Gentle Reader, “What is wrong” is what has already been wrong for a very long time in the thinking of our culture. They no longer believe the truth. They abandoned it starting in 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the chapel door at Wittenberg and initiated his revolt against the True Faith and a unified Catholic society. They jettisoned the Revealed Religion of God, like teenagers vandalizing the family home by throwing a block party while their parents were away. “Home Alone” was a funny movie but the act of rebelling against truth and order destroys the very foundation of civil society itself, not to mention the infinitely more important matter of abandoning the one and only vehicle of their eternal salvation. And it was mostly these people who came to North America to escape the established order and founded our current North American culture. The first culture in history that worshiped the supreme individual.

Catholic moral customs inherited from centuries of Catholic and Roman civilization survived until the decade of the 1960’s.  In the 60’s the rot of secular humanist progressivism exploded at an alarming rate courtesy of the new permissive immorality of the movie industry, and the secular broadcast and print media who prepared the social garden for people finally to abandon the traditional Catholic moral customs. This abandonment of order for hedonism and personal licentiousness was precipitated during the 1960’s by the advent of the birth control pill. This released society from all the traditional restrictions related to family and child bearing and proclaimed a new era of “freedom”.

This freedom was  accompanied by the full court press of the movie and print industry in portraying on the screen and in magazines all manner of immoral behavior and encouraging fornication, pedophilia, adultery, murder and all sorts of revolting violence. As any one who reads history can tell, there is nothing new under the sun in the nature and types of human perversity and deviance but the massive barrage of encouragement and removal of restraint embraced by the media resulted in a general disintegration of sexual morality, pandemic infidelity, a meteoric rise in divorce, dramatic increases in STD’s (by one definition life is a fatal STD) and finally the abortion of generations of children in the name of “choice”.

http://www.numberofabortions.com/

Top this all off with the alarming increase in drug abuse, and the rest of human morals simply disintegrated. This is the scenario we have personally witnessed in just the past 60 years! The personal fabric of our lives and experiences of “modernism” as a sad tale indeed. The discussion here is not academic. The collapse of Catholic customs has taken place only recently, within the lifetimes of many of us. The result will destroy what little is left of our civilization.

This root of the collapse is the result of Protestantism. The Reformation was the great civil war of Christianity and the Catholic Church lost because it had itself abandoned the right and permitted myriad abuses, rather similar to where we see the church today with it’s scandals and progressive reforms and all the other trappings of the modernist leprosy. Protestantism gave birth to Modernism when it embraced private interpretation of the Bible. With the Protestant Revolt from revealed truth and the divinely established authority in the person and office of the Pope in Rome, everyone became his own little pope.

These people could not abide one man’s being “infallible” (not a Catholic claim but a Protestant fantasy and rationalization) , a man who held the divine commission from Jesus Christ Himself, when He said to St. Peter, “I say to thee: that thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys to the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven” (Matt. 16:18-20). These people could not abide this one man’s being infallible (ignoring the minor inconvenient fact of the concept of  “ex cathedra“), whose authority exists only within the strictly defined limits of a tightly bound 2,000 year old universally known tradition, all the while being guided by the Holy Spirit, the “Paraclete” whom Christ had sent. These people could not accept this sort of God assisted, worldwide, visible, tightly constrained teacher.

These people could and DID accept, and continue to this day to accept, THEMSELVES(!) as the infallible, unfailing, inerrant rule of faith and morals (rather like Eve in the Garden – they would become as gods, the sole judge and arbiter of right truth each one their own little mirror of godliness). These people, the masses, who are often mental pygmies in theoretical matters, uninstructed in theology and philosophy, poorly informed, busy with practical affairs, weak, sick and all of that; they themselves are the only, the one, the true and infallible authority which they will accept! Only themselves!  God preserve us from such pathological narcissism!

(to be continued)
