Life in a small town

Gnosticism, Atheism and Modernism = Liberal Socialist Dictatorship – Part 1

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following the release of an ethics report in Ottawa on Wednesday December 20, 2017.

Another long post, sigh, just trying to make sense of what is going on. I guess I’ll just split it into two parts. I don’t actually believe that folks are really stupid, or at least they are no stupider than I am and I have had highs and lows, sometimes epic lows of the “Hold my beer … ” variety over the last 7 decades.

How does one “Love folks” with sincere charity when they often appear so eminently unlovable.  Jesus loves them … how come I have so much trouble imitating Him.

So 33% of our electorate put an Atheistic Socialist dictatorship back in power in Canada.  I am trying to restructure how I think about my country in a way that doesn’t leave me feeling sick to my stomach.

Its a bit of a stretch just now, since what I see is definitely not Christian by any stretch of the word. The “Nones” have carried the day and all that’s left is the cleanup after the “Celebration of Life” when they put our old “Western” civilization in the ground. I’m trying to come up with a “New Model” that accounts for everything I see actually happening day by day in my country and also in the world at large.

The bottom line seems to be that about a third of Canadians are happy with the status quo and have far more faith in their Liberal politicians than they have ever had in any god, and that without any material evidence, but that is enough for Canadians to keep the government as it is. Less than a third, so much for democracy, and majority rule. So much for values that build a strong economy, and a moral compass that protects life and the innocent and helpless.

The recent Alberta election saw a 70% voter turnout, the highest in Alberta history. The UCP gained about 55% of the popular vote, also the highest in Alberta history and 63 seats, reducing Premier Rachel Notley’s governing Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) to Official Opposition with 24 seats in the university heartland of Calgary and Edmonton.

Jason Kenny, Premier of Alberta, strongest mandate in Alberta history.

Jason Kenny, our new UPC Premier has a strong mandate from his people, Albertans, to take us in the directions he presented during the election and he has started having hour-long “question and answer” podcasts … his version of Roosevelt’s fireside chats I guess, to keep us in the loop and present us with the UCP side of things since most of the media are drooling zombies with their loyalty to Rachel and her merry band of plunderers.

Of course, Trump uses Tweets for this sort of thing but they are more provocative and less satisfying except when I am quite amused by what I see watching all the Canadian victims of Trump Derangement Syndrome frothing at the mouth with denunciations for what is pushed by the Liberal MSM in Canada as “news” and played by the Liberals as useful cover to keep the light off them and their corruption.

And this distraction is way better for the Liberal Party of Canada, and their backers at Tides Foundation Canada, if all the left voting Canadians are foaming at the mouth about a politician in another country about whom they can do nothing and have absolutely no influence over.

Victim-hood, in a mush of envy at other’s success, and resentment about imaginary wrongs inflicted by faceless “right-wingers”, is such a satisfying state of mind for the Left everywhere, and it is especially satisfying if you can blame a politician in another country for all the bad fallout from the current policy directions you voted for.

Canadians seem to have lost something important and they haven’t missed it because they have given up all the beliefs which used to remind my parents generation about what was important, important here and now and important for eternity, in fact, important enough to die for as evidenced by the Greatest Generation.

I borrow a short quote from “Is There a Santa Claus?” reprinted from the September 21, 1897 editorial of the New York Sun:

*****

“… Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds.

All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. …”

*****

So, this mindset, that of blaming others for the bad outcomes of your own choices, coupled with an overweening self adoration are the foundational planks of the Canadian National Church, and is all pervasive in our population both in the east where they have placed their trust in a shiny little band of Atheistic killers.

Domine, quo vadis?

But it is also found in the west where folks are quick to anger and judgemental of the “enemy in the east”.  What Canada and Canadians have lost, or maybe only misplaced (I pray) is that spirit of love, generosity, and devotion. They have misplaced faith, and have lost their concern for anything outside of their narrow self interest.

So, where are we now, and more importantly “Quo Vadis” wither goest thou, where are we going? To Calvary? Or to Hell?

What kind of “representative government” do we find ourselves experiencing? Let’s compare the outcome of the recent Alberta election and the strong voice of Albertans with the questionable outcome of the just finished Federal election. Do we get what we deserve?

In our recent Federal election where the the turnout was only 66% and the re-elected Liberal Party’s election victory was a curious event because its candidates took nearly half the seats with less than a third of the popular vote.

It marks only the second time in Canada’s history that a governing party will take power with such a low share of the vote. Mandate is Not US!  David Moscrop, a political theorist at the University of Ottawa, tweeted that “the last and only time a party has formed government with less than 35 percent of the national popular vote was John A. Macdonald in 1867 — with 34.8 percent.”  This vote beats the 1867 record, with the Liberal popular vote settling around 33 per cent.

Something to sing about …

Canada’s electoral system is referred to as a “first past the post” system. The candidate with the most votes in a riding wins a seat in the House of Commons and represents that riding as its Member of Parliament (MP).

The party whose candidates win the second largest number of seats becomes the Official Opposition. So much for democracy?  Or maybe this is a more realistic democracy than an iron clad two party system as our brothers across the 48th experience every election.

However you take the numbers it is crystal clear that Jason Kenny has a huge and strong mandate to speak for Albertans and to work for Alberta’s interests … Justin on the other hand has no mandate but rather secures his seat with an accidental result due to the electoral process. This is why we find Canada governed by the Dictatorship of the PMO, the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Canada is a diverse country and governing it requires a complex balancing of competing interests. There are some hard decisions that are best taken in private and away from public scrutiny.”

So we find ourselves governed by an unelected, unaccountable, secret cabal of close friends and cronies of the accidental prime minister. To paraphrase some of our discontented southern brethren “Not My Prime Minister!”

Many Canadians believe that they live in a “Parliamentary Democracy”. Nothing could be further from the truth, or perhaps a “Parliamentary Democracy” actually always is a dictatorship of the PMO. These Canadians will scratch their heads in confusion when presented with the idea that Canadians live in a dictatorship. But let’s take a moment to look at what is undeniably the de-facto manner of government in this country.

The Prime Minister’s Office, the PMO, and as it’s head, the Principal Secretary, have the power of yea and nay on literally everything which the parliament of Canada does or says. The government does not publish a mandate letter for the Principal Secretary of the PMO, as it does for all cabinet ministers. In fact, there is no publicly available job description for the principal secretary or any other staffers in the Prime Minster’s Office (PMO).

The Principal Secretary is the ultimate backroom operator, un-elected, and unaccountable to anyone except the Prime Minister. The PMO, is a secretive palace guard. It operates outside public view and scrutiny. PMO staffers are not public servants. They are political appointees, and their role is as much to foster the partisan political interests of their party as it is to coordinate government policy in the public interest.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin (front, R), Chinese President Xi Jinping (front, L), his wife Peng Liyuan (2nd row, L), and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (2nd row, R), arrive for a gala show to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two, in Beijing, China, September 3, 2015. REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon

A number of experts have noted that, since the 1960s, Canadian democracy has degenerated into a kind of executive dictatorship of the PMO. Both Liberal and Conservative elected members of Parliament have frequently complained, in private, about being relegated to the role of trained seals. Their job is to clap when ordered to do so by the PMO, as it is in most dictatorships world wide where they like to make a pretense of “representing the people“.

Many Ottawa insiders will tell you there’s nothing to see here, that this style of government is all par for the course. Federal governments have operated this way for decades, they say, at least since Justin Trudeau’s father’s time.

Again, as one insider put it “Canada is a diverse country and governing it requires a complex balancing of competing interests. There are some hard decisions that are best taken in private and away from public scrutiny.”

A dictatorship in all but name … and it is true that they are arguably doing a better job than dictatorships elsewhere, like Venezuela, or Syria, or even Russia, or China depending on whether you are part of the “IN” crowd or not … how things look all depend on perspective and nuance, right?

So what does that leave us for a society … a culture of … what? Quality of life is pretty damned good compared to most of the world … our lives and our comforts are top drawer but what about the spiritual, the fabric of our relations with our families and our neighbours, and just what exactly is the point of our comfortable existence? Where is the love and generosity and devotion, where is life’s highest beauty and joy?

Cheers

Joe

Cake Made Of Flour And Rat Poison …

“Crux Fidelis”, Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, from the album “Lent at Ephesus”, (2014)

The first Sunday of the month we celebrate our Mass on the Saturday evening – last night. This leaves my Sunday morning free for thinking and reading and catching up on blogs and drinking good coffee. Every now and again I come across an outstanding post on someone else’s blog or an article in an online publication or some beautifully articulated observation.

A beautifully articulated observation about the reality which we like to pretend is a good society and within the shelter of which we pretend that we are good persons. But no amount of virtue signalling can change the underlying evil evident in our modern society, can disguise the fact that this is the worldly kingdom of the Father of Lies. Just such a beautifully articulated observation is an article by Anthony Esolen which I came across at LifeSiteNews:

*****

What is remarkable in our age is not that half of our citizens believe it is wrong to kill the child in the womb, the child whose existence, except in the rare case of rape, is owing to our own voluntary actions.  That would be like congratulating ourselves for believing that it’s wrong to steal someone’s car, to lie under oath to hurt an enemy, to throw our aged parents into the street, or to desecrate churches.

Where is the great moral insight?  What’s remarkable instead is that half of us believe it is all right to snuff out the life of that child – because nothing must be allowed to interfere with our “right” to pursue pleasure, as we use the child-making thing as a sweating-off spa on our way to money, prestige, a five-bathroom mansion for two, a tenured chair in Women’s Studies, the mayoralty of Camden, another year of nights out on the town, whatever.

How have we come to this pass?  Our imaginations are stunted or diseased, that’s how.
Let churchgoers beware.  You cannot spread pro-life icing on a cake made of flour and rat poison.  Our children meet with rat poison everywhere.

Do they watch Friends on television, that un-funny amoral “comedy” about nihilist young urbanites trading depressions in the mattress with one another?  Rat poison.

Do they watch movies like – well, the moronic Titanic, wherein a shrewish girl and a pouty boy fornicate before they are swallowed by the deep blue sea?  Rat poison.

Do their school teachers feed them such exalted lyric poetry as that of Sylvia Plath, imagining what it would be like to smash her sleeping husband’s head like a rotten pumpkin?

Or the bogus Laramie Project, making a hero out of a deeply disturbed young man, killed in a meth deal?

Or Toni Morrison’s maudlin obsessions with race and adultery?

Is it an endless cafeteria of ghouls, vampires, girl-murderers – Lord of the Flies, without the severe moral imagination and the talent of William Golding?  Lord of the Flies, Lady of the Flies, Cheerleaders of the Flies, Lifeguard of the Flies, Mr. Goodbar of the Flies, Fight Club of the Flies, Hunger of the Flies?

Rat poison, with that peculiar character of rat poison, that the more the critter consumes, the thirstier it grows….”( READ THE REST HERE)

And what has Jesus to say about the Father of Lies? Extra! Extra! Read All About It! In the New International Version of John 8: 34-47:

*****

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever”. 36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.

44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

I tend to avoid LifeSiteNews  because, while what they report on is true and accurate, what they offer is an unrelenting reportage of failure, destruction, and the ever accelerating death throes of our culture and society.

I have difficulty finding any hope on the site and there are absolutely no viable solutions in a class with the dragons we face. If I had to report something good about the site I would have to mention an important insight first realized while reading this site, namely, to say that first, there is no hope, and second, that none of it matters.

None of it matters … this world is not important … the sweaty, reality challenged, daily dramas of our society Simply – Aren’t – Important! It’s all just so much Rat Poison.

What IS important is that ONLY Eternity is important. There is absolutely NOTHING in this world which is important in Eternity EXCEPT how we conduct ourselves in relation to this World, and in relation to Eternity. There truly is NO hope in this world, and this world, and the things of this world, are doomed to pass away returning into the cesspool from which they arose like the monster from the slab of our self worship. And make no mistake about it. If we ARE of this world (and who isn’t, to a greater or lesser degree?) we WILL pass away with this world and return to the cesspool as rats do after eating Rat Poison.

So what are we to do? How can we cope with the necrotic dissolution of everything we hold dear in this material world? Now, sitting here at 65 years old watching my friends and customers suffering and dieing and experiencing the utter powerlessness of the best of human efforts to find happiness and ease. It is a lot easier to imagine a universe where we are manifestly NOT the pinnacle of everything and most definitely not worthy of worship as we once found it so easy to do in our twenties and thirties.

In our twenties and thirties – anyone’s twenties and thirties – it is easy to love … ourselves … until the body knows discomfort, pain, death …

Once upon a time…young bodies…beauty woven around a knot of need…preening like the flowers of carnivorous plants. Each of us the most important thing in the world, such was the seduction of that knot of need. and now, only the moment, each tumbling into the next. The body knows discomfort, a slowly growing pain…over and over again…as firm and true as steps, the firm earth reverberating up through my boots, the tactile affirming reality over and over again and nothing else matters… paraphrase from “The Malazan Book of the Fallen

So why do I start to feel joy like a faint but growing light further down this sewage filled tunnel which we call “life” for want of something deeper, more accurate, less flattering to our self image? The answer to this is in a word — “prayer”. Not just a few minutes spent on my knees struggling to find something meaningful to say, or in my attendance at church for an hour, chanting the responses by rote while dreaming about what I will have for lunch, but prayer that turns every waking minute into a prayer.

Now, it has been my observation, that those of this world repudiate every mention of prayer as trite, ineffectual, quaint, superstitious, lacking in intellectual validity – in short, prayer is mocked and belittled as the refuge of idiots. And yet this is not so “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.”

No, prayer, in reality, becomes a more or less continual awareness of Jesus living and growing within us. True, at first we are very much enmeshed in the less side of “more or less”. But as we persevere we become aware of Jesus working in us, molding us to his desire, which is our cooperation, our submission, our surrender, our companionship, as we begin to give up our own way and surrender ourselves to His way.

Mortification of self begins as a painful exercise but, practiced sincerely, one starts to get glimpses of mortification as invitation to Jesus to take the place of our self in our life. I am thinking that it is a habitual and determined opposition to the will of the Lord that is the greatest barrier to development of an intimate relationship with Him.

We continue to assert our self. We resist accepting that we cannot welcome Him into some parts of our life but steadfastly slam the door on other parts of that life. He is present everywhere and at all times and waits patiently for our surrender of those parts which we willfully try to “keep private”.

We start to realize that we want god in our lives but we insist on doing it on our terms, in our way, and not surrendering to God, to His will and His direction. That is why we only get glimpses of that light and joy at the end of the sewer.

It’s a stone cold merciless bitch, this forcing oneself to move away from the pool of narcissism and self worship and our attachments to the rat poison of our worldly lives. And it is the only path through the tunnel to Eternity.

Cheers

Joe

El Humanismo Secular es Pecado – Part 2

(continued from last post)
… (the “I’m OK, Your OK” generation, their children, and grand-children are especially sensitive to being reminded of past failures and disasters and having current failings remarked on) …

In spite of that, or perhaps because of that it is critically important at this point in history, to reflect on what has gone wrong. Can anyone seriously believe that we live in the best of all worlds, the promised land of the Enlightenment? Did the abandonment of the old order really set us free to realize the full potential of humanity, the Overman,  Overhuman,  Above-Human,  Superman,  Super-human, Ultra-human, Higher-Person, Higher-Being. The previous are just a few of the myriad variations of the new Narcissism of the 20th century. The views and values here discussed are so important to each person individually, and to the very survival of our society as a whole, that every thinking human being must become familiar with the issues covered here.

Secular Humanist Progressivism in essence says and believes that there is no objective truth. To quote Pontius Pilate, “What is truth?”, is a patently absurd question. And in the practical order of our social and political lives Secular Humanist Progressivism leads to a practiced atheism, that is, to a situation in society where, though we do not deny the existence of God, we nonetheless must conduct ourselves vis-a-vis one another as if God did not exist, because we must in effect deny that He has a right to tell man what to do.  This situation results from Secular Humanist Progressivism ‘s denying in effect that there is one body of revealed truth, or even Natural Law, with which man must comply. Secular Humanist Progressivism therefore destroys adherence to the Natural Law, that law which we all understand to be true without the assistance of divine Revelation. But it also destroys the universal acceptance among people of divine Revelation.

Adherence to both the supernatural and the natural order, therefore, breaks down under its influence, and the result is chaos in individual lives and anarchy in society. This is patently obvious for any impartial observer. Look around you today, follow the media, read the literature, watch the movies, observe the politics, experience government administration, LIVE in our modern culture, and taste reality. No thinking, intelligent person can conclude otherwise than that we are “Going to Hell in a hay-basket: as the saying goes. The universal secular humanist progressive ideas that “one religion is basically as good as another” and that “it does not matter what a person believes so long as he is a good person” were spawned almost automatically and by logical necessity due to the context leading up to where we find ourselves today.  Let’s take a look back behind the Modernist’s Wizard curtain.

By the year 304 A.D., Christianity (read here “Catholicism”) had pretty well permeated and converted the ancient Roman world, so that with the victory of Constantine the Great at that time in the battle of the Malvian Bridge and with his succession as Roman Emperor in that year, Catholicism became the official religion of society.  And as the Roman world more and more influenced its neighbors, especially the northern European peoples, the civilization that developed there was Roman-Catholicized civilization, or Catholicized-Roman civilization, if you will. At the time of the Protestant Reformation (read “Revolt”), starting in 1517 and continuing throughout that century, European civilization had already been well formed by the Catholic religion for, at the most, 1,200 years in some regions to, at the least, 400 years in others.  Don’t take my word for it. Just read any pre – Public School system “Social Studies” history (see Magical Thinking” in previous post) to discover undisputed facts about our historical past.

Liberalism and Narcissism -is there a connection?

Item found at http://www.amazon.com/Liberalism-Sin-Conde-Pallen-PhD/dp/1492847976

In 1886 there appeared in Spain a little work under the title El Liberalismo es Pecado, “Liberalism Is a Sin,” by Don Felix Sarda y Salvany, a priest of Barcelona and editor of a journal called La Revista Popular. The book excited considerable commotion. It was vigorously assailed by the Liberals. A Spanish Bishop of a Liberal turn instigated an answer to Dr. Sarda’s work by way of another Spanish priest. Both books were sent to Rome, praying the Sacred Congregation of the Index to put Dr. Sarda’s work under the ban.

The following letter, under date of January 10, 1887, from the Sacred Congregation itself, explains the result of its consideration of the two volumes:

Most Excellent Sir: The Sacred Congregation of the Index has received the denunciation of the little work bearing the title El Liberalismo es Pecado by Don Felix Sarda y Salvany, a priest of your diocese; the denunciation was accompanied at the same time by another little work, entitled El Proceso del Integrismo, that is, “A refutation of the errors contained in the little work El Liberalismo es Pecado.”

The author of the second work is D. de Pazos, a canon of the diocese of Vich. Whereupon, the Sacred Congregation has carefully examined both works and decided as follows: In the first, not only is nothing found contrary to sound doctrine, but its author, D. Felix Sarda, merits great praise for his exposition and defense of the sound doctrine therein set forth with solidity, order and lucidity, and without personal offense to anyone.

The same judgment, however, cannot be passed on the other work, that by D. de Pazos, for in matter it needs corrections. Moreover, his injurious manner of speaking cannot be approved, for he inveighs rather against the person of D. Sarda than against the latter’s supposed errors.

Therefore, the Sacred Congregation has commanded D. de Pazos, admonished by his own Bishop, to withdraw his book, as far as he can, from circulation, and in the future, if any discussion of the subject should arise, to abstain from all expressions personally injurious, according to the precept of true Christian charity; and this all the more since Our Holy Father, Leo XIII, whereas he urgently recommends castigation of error, neither desires nor approves expressions personally injurious, especially when directed against those who are eminent for their doctrine and their piety.

In communicating to you this order of the Sacred Congregation of the Index, that you may be able to make it known to the illustrious priest of your diocese, D. Sarda, for his peace of mind, I pray God to grant you all happiness and prosperity, and subscribe myself with great respect,

Your most obedient servant,

FR. JEROME SECHERI, O.P.

Secretary of the Sacred Congregation Of the Index. To The Most Rev. Jacobo Catala et Alboso, Bishop of Barcelona.

Cheers

Anger and Narcissism

Nothing new under the sun. Narcissism and narcissists have always been with us. Prideful, manipulative folks with an inflated sense of their own worth and the worthlessness of everyone else.

But our progressive society is the first in history to widely approve and even glorify these malignancies as glamorous and exciting.  The almighty “I” has become the center and measure of all things.

Anger and Narcissism

Does one have to be a narcissist to be aware of a narcissist?

tracking the illusive narcissist… signs, signals and clues…

1.Narcissism is that wonderful and endearing quality exhibited by most progressives (common in gubmint executive suites and director’s offices everywhere but also observed in the high cloister of many private corporations) which dismisses, belittles, negates, ignores, minimizes, denigrates or otherwise renders irrelevant other people’s concerns. No matter what ANYONE brings up in discussion or at a meeting the progressive has a better, bigger, louder, faster, more painful, …. you know what it’s like… and of course all the little people are idiot rubes from fly-over country… (exaggerated for emphasis – that’s my own narcissism leaking out)

2. Why is it always about you? Nuff said…

3. When things tank it’s always my fault…. hmmmm ever felt what it’s like as a gubmint peon? (aka program officer, EA, front line staff, etc)

4. My observations and concerns are really criticisms of you. You hate being criticized. That makes me the problem … endless possibilities with this one usually involving mockery, belittling, chastising, psychological projection, or even dismissal… Yup, endless possibilities with this one.

5. The rules don’t apply to you. WTF!!!! There is some magical quality that gives you the power and the justification to ignore reality, ignore laws, bully, destroy. Rules are for little people (see #4)

6. I am making you angry and it is all my fault. Oh joy…

7. I don’t really feel the way I just said I felt. You know how I REALLY feel. Oh, see #6…

cheers
